Event Overview
On August 17, 2024, Better Future Finders (BFF) held its first-ever “Back to School with a Purpose” event, drawing over 100 students from the Lower Yakima Valley to the Yakima Convention and Event Center. Students from elementary, middle, and high schools participated in a full day of interactive workshops, keynote addresses, and networking, all designed to prepare them for a successful academic year. Participants received valuable insights on topics like study habits, goal-setting, communication, and career readiness, along with backpacks filled with essential school supplies.

Opening Remarks and Keynote
Dr. Emmanuel Femi Jaiyeola, President of BFF, kicked off the day with a warm welcome and outlined the goals of the program. Following his introduction, Joshua Jaiyeola set the tone with an overview of the day’s activities.
Christie Rogers, an experienced Accounting Manager, delivered the keynote address, sharing her inspiring journey and emphasizing the importance of perseverance and focus. Her message resonated with students, motivating them to seize educational opportunities.

Tailored Workshops and Activities
Students were divided into groups by age—elementary, middle, and high school—with each group engaging in age-appropriate workshops led by expert facilitators. Topics included “Effective Study Habits,” “Goal Setting and Time Management,” and “Avoiding Distractions and Peer Pressure.” Hands-on activities, interactive tools, and real-life examples kept the students engaged, while a Q&A session led by Joshua Jaiyeola gave them the chance to discuss their personal challenges and receive tailored advice.

Youth Leadership and Empowerment
BFF Youth Ambassador Gabby hosted raffle draws for school supplies and gift cards, adding excitement to the day. A special segment featured presentations by Youth Ambassadors, where they spoke passionately about their desire to be change agents in their schools and communities. This session showcased the leadership potential of Yakima’s youth and reinforced the event’s mission of fostering purposeful, empowered students.

Gifts and Supplies
Every participant left with a backpack containing school essentials such as a winter coat, BFF year planner, pens, lanyards, and other supplies to set them up for success in the coming school year.

Lunch and Networking
A delicious lunch provided by Sodexo Catering Services allowed attendees to connect with their peers and mentors. It was a time to reflect on the morning sessions and prepare for the afternoon activities.

Looking Ahead
BFF plans to replicate the “Back to School with a Purpose” program in schools across the Yakima community and expand its reach next year. The success of this year’s event has paved the way for future initiatives aimed at empowering even more students to achieve their full potential.

Event Evaluation and Impact
Under the guidance of Dr. Oluwafemi Johnson Sunday, pre- and post-event evaluations were conducted to measure the impact of the workshops on student attitudes and knowledge. The feedback will help BFF refine its future programs to maximize positive outcomes for the community.
